The Candle Care Guide You Didn’t Know You Needed (But Totally Do)
Because candles aren’t just cute—they’re a lifestyle.
Let’s be honest: we’ve all bought a gorgeous candle, lit it once, and then... suddenly it’s tunneling like it’s digging its way to Narnia. Or it burned weird. Or it just didn’t last as long as you thought it would.
I get it. Life is chaotic (especially when you’re a parent or just tired of being an adult), and sometimes we just want to light a candle and feel like our house smells more like “spa day” and less like chicken nuggets and mystery laundry.
So whether you’re new to candles or you’ve been burning since Bath & Body Works gave out free bags in the 2000s, here’s your ultimate Candle Care Guide—made with love by me, a mom of 3 and founder of Tres Luces Candles.
🕯️ 1. The First Burn is a BIG Deal
AKA: Don’t mess this up.
The first time you light your candle, let it burn until the entire top layer of wax is melted all the way across. This can take 2–4 hours depending on the size. Why? Because wax has a memory. (No really—like an emotional Cancer ♋️)
If you blow it out too soon, your candle will tunnel. Which is fancy candle speak for "wasting wax and breaking my heart."
Pro tip: Set it, forget it (safely), and enjoy the vibe. You’re training your candle for success—kind of like gentle parenting, but with fire.
✂️ 2. Trim That Wick, Babe
Before every burn. Yes, every single one.
Grab some wick trimmers or scissors and trim your wick to about ¼ inch before lighting. If not? The flame gets too big, your candle burns too fast, and you get that annoying black soot.
Plus, nobody likes a smoky, drama-filled candle. Keep it classy.
Mom Hack: Can’t find your wick trimmer because your toddler turned it into a Barbie sword? Use nail clippers. Been there.
🧯 3. Burn Smart, Not Long
Your candle has limits. Just like you.
Don’t burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time. After that, your wick starts to mushroom, the scent weakens, and the candle gets a little unstable (don’t we all?).
Set a timer—because you’ll probably forget once the vibes are vibing.
🏠 4. Keep It Safe (but Make It Pretty)
Candles are mood-setters, not fire hazards.
Always burn your candle:
- On a heat-safe surface
- Away from drafts, curtains, kids, and curious cats
- Within sight (you wouldn't leave a toddler alone with glitter, would you?)
Make it cute, but make it safe. Because nothing kills a vibe like the smoke alarm.
♻️ 5. Reuse the Jar, You're an Eco-Queen
When the wax is done, the magic doesn’t have to be.
When your candle has about ½ inch of wax left, it’s time to retire her (RIP). Don’t burn it dry—it's bad for the jar and your safety.
Clean it out and reuse it for:
- Q-tips
- Hair ties
- Tiny snacks you don’t want to share
- A mini plant baby
- Manifestation jar, because obviously
❤️ Bonus Tips From a Candle-Loving Mompreneur
- Let your candle cool completely before relighting.
- Store candles in a cool, dry place (not your car in July, please).
- Don’t blow it out—snuff it or use a candle lid. Fancy and functional.
Final Thoughts: Treat Your Candle Like Your Favorite Friend
It sets the mood, smells amazing, makes your house feel cozy... but it needs a little TLC in return.
Follow these tips, and your Tres Luces Candle will love you back—longer, cleaner, and with all the good vibes you deserve.
